Female Coders Allege Gender Bias at Facebook

FacebookImageCrop1Data shows that code written by female engineers at Facebook was rejected more often than code written by men.  Some female engineers are crying foul play, stating that the data confirms their beliefs that female employees’ coding faced more scrutiny than male employees’ coding.  Facebook attributes any gap to an engineer’s rank, not gender. However, this could be a sign of gender discrimination if female engineers are not being promoted at the same rate as their male engineer counterparts.  A Facebook spokesperson stated that the initial analysis was inaccurate, but agreed that there are not enough women at senior engineering levels at Facebook and across the technology industry.

The engineering field has long faced a gender gap from college classrooms to the workplace.  According to the Wall Street Journal, Facebook’s latest diversity report shows that women account for only 17% of technical roles at Facebook.
